Job Summary
The Senior Migration Architect is responsible for leading structured discovery, analysis, and design activities to define migration strategies for complex enterprise environments, with a strong emphasis on analytical decision‑making and strong working knowledge of infrastructure domains sufficient to lead and manage discussions with subject matter experts (SMEs). This role partners closely with Solution Architects, delivery teams, and client stakeholders to conduct comprehensive discovery of application and infrastructure landscapes, translating business and technical inputs into clear, data‑driven migration architectures.
The Senior Migration Architect acts as the primary architectural face to the client and is expected to operate as a trusted advisor, invoking confidence through demonstrated knowledge, structured thinking, and professional presence. The role requires strong organizational skills, task prioritization, and the ability to navigate and resolve conflicting viewpoints, ensuring productive collaboration across business, technical, and infrastructure stakeholders.
The Migration Architect serves as a technical authority across infrastructure, platforms, and cloud technologies, driving discovery efforts to understand current‑state environments, validate data quality, identify dependencies, and surface technical constraints and risks. Using the outcomes of discovery, the architect evaluates migration feasibility and defines migration approaches that are secure, scalable, and operationally sound.
The role requires the ability to analyze large, complex, and often incomplete data sets, reconcile conflicting inputs, and apply critical thinking to assess risk, performance, cost, and operational impact. Architectural decisions, assumptions, risks, and trade‑offs are clearly documented and communicated to guide stakeholders and delivery teams through complex migration initiatives.
Job Role
- Demonstrated ability to define and deliver structured migration assessments for customer application and infrastructure portfolios, including data validation, dependency identification, migration grouping, and strategy definition.
- Proven ability to work directly with client SMEs in discovery and assessment workshops, understand application and infrastructure intricacies, and extract the information required to support migration planning across diverse application types.
- Strong analytical capability to prioritize migration sequencing and wave planning based on business criticality, technical constraints, dependencies, performance requirements, and risk.
- Experience collaborating with application, infrastructure, platform, and security SMEs and cross‑tower teams to plan migrations, including the creation of wave plans and detailed play‑by‑play migration runbooks.
- Demonstrated experience producing Excel‑based migration artifacts, including application and infrastructure baselines, wave planning models, and play‑by‑play migration plans, which serve as the primary inputs for migration execution.
- Ability to analyze business, technical, and application requirements, identify risks and issues, and perform cost and feasibility analysis to support migration decisions.
- Strong understanding of security considerations across applications, infrastructure, networks, and platforms in hybrid and multi‑environment migrations.
- Working knowledge of public cloud architectures, with experience or exposure to Microsoft Azure and AWS preferred.
- Direct experience participating in or leading enterprise migration, transformation, or datacenter exit initiatives, with an emphasis on assessment and planning.
- Strong client‑facing proficiency, including the ability to lead discussions, deliver clear and structured presentations, and communicate complex migration concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences. Demonstrated skill in building trust with clients by clearly articulating migration strategies, risks, trade‑offs, and recommendations in a confident and professional manner.
- Strong ability to drive technical conversations with subject matter experts (SMEs) across application, infrastructure, platform, and security domains, including the capability to ask the right questions, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and extract accurate, actionable information required for discovery, analysis, and migration planning.
- Solid Excel proficiency as a core skill; Power BI experience is a strong plus.
Job Responsibilities.
- Lead migration architecture and planning activities across assessment and execution phases.
- Facilitate application and infrastructure discovery workshops with client SMEs to validate data, identify dependencies, and surface constraints.
- Partner with Solution Architects to translate target‑state architectures into actionable migration plans, wave groupings, and execution tasks.
- Collaborate with cross‑tower teams to build wave plans, Excel baselines, and detailed play‑by‑play migration runbooks.
- Maintain and evolve Excel‑based migration artifacts that act as the system of record for migration planning and execution.
- Analyze and document risks, assumptions, constraints, mitigation strategies, and alternatives.
- Provide hands‑on migration planning support during execution, adjusting plans as new information emerges.
- Maintain regular progress updates, including accomplishments, upcoming tasks, dependencies, and roadblocks, and communicate these clearly to Project Managers and management to support effective coordination and decision‑making.
- Communicate migration status and insights using structured data and, where applicable, Power BI visualization
Leadership
- Contribute to migration strategy definition for large‑scale transformation initiatives through structured analysis and discovery‑driven insights.
- Mentor and guide consultants in discovery methods, analytical thinking, and migration planning best practices.
- Drive alignment and consensus across business and technical stakeholders, clearly articulating options, risks, and trade‑offs.
- Influence migration outcomes through data‑driven reasoning and architectural judgment, without direct authority.
- Effectively communicate the “why” behind migration decisions to build trust and confidence with clients and delivery teams.
