A major component of the United States’ armed forces.

The client had adopted a cloud strategy that requires all mission applications to be migrated off the mainframe and into the cloud. SAIC is a technology company that supports these migrations, bringing in the best service providers to accelerate the process.

One of the critical applications mandated for migration provides maintenance and material management funding, enabling personnel to plan workload and manpower actions for a five-year period and then track the results.

The system had been created many years ago, and the team members responsible for managing it were nearing retirement. Modernizing the application by translating it into code that most developers use would eliminate the risk of not being able to hire new staff.

The migration of the application required 64 programs to be converted from COBOL to .NET and C#, and the legacy database to be converted from Datacom to SQL Server.

Due to its strong track record with US government agencies, legacy code translation tools, and long-standing relationship with Microsoft, Ensono was selected by SAIC to deliver the code and database conversion.

Ensono’s team translated the legacy code and database, testing it using baselines to ensure all functionality was maintained.

• A total of 64 batch and online programs were converted, with 44,965 lines of code being converted from COBOL and Ideal to C#
• The legacy Datacom database was converted to SQL

Now that they are in modern code languages, the systems can be more easily maintained and worked on by a wider team of developers, giving the client a more secure, future-ready system.
