Revolutionizing Medical Equipment Monitoring for Improved Efficiency with PerkinElmer
The Client
PerkinElmer, a leading provider of medical equipment and technology solutions, sought to modernize their lab instrument monitoring and problem alerting system to streamline operations and ensure error-free processes in their advanced laboratories.
The Obstacles Faced
PerkinElmer’s state-of-the-art medical instruments, while highly efficient, required manual intervention for sample handling, maintenance, and material replenishment. This human involvement introduced a risk of errors that hindered lab efficiency. Deciphering generic error codes was time-consuming, leading to bottlenecks in output and inefficient processes.
The Journey
To address these challenges, we embarked on a journey to design and implement a comprehensive monitoring system for PerkinElmer’s medical instruments.
- Hardware Prototyping: We began by developing hardware prototypes to integrate cameras and passive error listeners into the equipment.
- Firmware Prototyping: Firmware prototypes were created to enable real-time data collection and analysis.
- Cloud Infrastructure: We established a robust cloud infrastructure to support data storage, retrieval, and analysis.
- Android Development: A mobile app was developed to provide a user-friendly interface for accessing and managing monitoring data.
- Twilio Messaging Platform: Real-time error notifications were implemented using the Twilio messaging platform.
- AWS Hosting: The system was hosted on AWS, ensuring scalability and reliability.
- GDPR Compliance: Data privacy and security were paramount, with built-in GDPR compliance.
The Future
The journey didn’t end with the initial system. We achieved the following outcomes and have further plans to enhance the system:
- Product Expansion: The success of the initial model led to the development of a more robust platform with compatibility for a range of medical instruments.
- Advanced Dashboard: Our ongoing efforts involve creating a comprehensive dashboard that displays uptime, downtime, throughput, and advanced notification settings for multiple instruments. This dashboard will seamlessly integrate with the lab’s workflow.
- Synergistic UX: Extensive research on lab processes is underway, with the goal of designing a UX that seamlessly incorporates the lab’s workflow with the interface.
- Mobile App Integration: A mobile app will be integrated into the platform, providing a deeper, more user-friendly experience. It will facilitate information access, tracking, storage, and sharing, all in compliance with GDPR regulations.
